B. 1979 : Wellington, New Zealand. Based in Australia

Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, I am an artist, educator and remote community arts worker currently based in the West Kimberley outback. I am a multi-disciplined artist exhibiting under my surname, Breckon.

After studying at Victorian College of the Arts I traveled to the Kimberley outback to gain a fresh perspective on Australia, an experience that introduced me to Aboriginal culture and motivated my decision to develop teaching skills. After teaching photography within the New Zealand education system, I returned to Australia searching for opportunities within community arts organisations. After several short-term placements in Arnhem Land, I returned to the West Kimberley region where I have been based for the last five years. My time is shared between my independent arts practice and employment at Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Culture Centre where I manage the community collection and multimedia space, a project called Dolord Mindi.

Living in the Kimberley is isolating and I maintain connected to art news and industry networks through online resources and opportunities to exhibit and attend workshops. Conceptually, my artwork benefits from being isolated in an unfamiliar landscape and culture. The unfamiliar stimulates fresh creative ideas and the vast amount of unpopulated land allows for unrestricted making space. In 2016 and 2017 I was awarded several grants supporting a program of intensive creative and professional development to support the creation of new work.
