Map: Bushtrip 2018, road to Jilariba (Munja Station)

$0.00

About this map: After ten hours of driving the Gibb River Road, we arrived at Mulumbu with enough light remaining to set up camp. This bush trip was a Back to Country camp connecting with Ngarinyin people from the east Kimberley. My role was to provide art supplies and engage youth in recording a story told by an elder. We recorded audio in the shade of a boab tree and video in the long grass along the ridge.

Materials Incised paint on aluminium.
Size 162 x 95 cm (wxh)
Framed by Plastic Sandwich (Perth) no glass, includes hanging supports on back.

From the drawing series Backtrack, exhibited at Fremantle Arts Centre (2023). During a transition away from full-time remote arts work, I began mapping the Kimberley routes I travelled as a way to acknowledge and process those years. Plotting movement over time became a method of reflective journalling. Early drawings trace recurring flight paths between the Kimberley and Aotearoa New Zealand; later works retrace bush trips undertaken while working with Wandjina Wunggurr peoples. Some journeys remain deliberately undrawn; those shown relate to places already publicly accessible.
