PRIMARY STRUCTURES

Primary Structures explores fundamental drawing processes and spatial awareness. While studying at Whanganui Quay School of the Arts in 2005, Breckon stripped back her art practice to focus on these ideas. Frustrated by the limitations of the page, she experimented with activating space by suspending lines and marks, enabling the viewer to interact more freely with the drawing.

This drawing depicts a wooden school desk typically found in primary schools across Aotearoa, New Zealand in the 1970s and ‘80s. Breckon found the original school desk on the roadside in Patea, 60 km northwest of Whanganui on the north island of Aotearoa New Zealand. She dismantled it by removing the nails, screws and hinges, before reassembling the desk using thread and the original joinery, transforming it into an ethereal sketch of its original form.
